S: Oh, I’m so furious!
E: What happened to you? It looks like someone punched you in the
face.
S: You’re not far off the mark. Oh, I don’t believe that stupid cow
Nicki! She went way too far this time.
E: What?! Nicki punched you in the face?
S: She threw a cordless phone at my head. I mean, look at this cut!
I had to get seven stitches!
E: What the hell did she do that for?
S: She couldn’t find her new Cartier watch, and accused me of
stealing it. The cheek! When I found it under her bed, she
started saying that if I had tidied her room more carefully, it
wouldn’t have fallen there in the first place. Then she threw
the phone at me.
E: What a nerve! So what did you say to that?
S: I gave her my notice. There’s no way I’m going to go back and
work for her after that! And I called the police.
E: Good on you. I hope they charged her.
S: Yep. They booked her for second degree assault.
E: That’s good to hear. Maybe now she’ll get what’s coming to her.

"not far off the mark"は「それほど的を外れていない」という意味で、
日本語の表現と同じである。"not far off"は「それほど離れていない、
大きく外れていない、ほぼ正しい」という意味。"mark"は「的」という
意味。
Ex: Keith is always off the mark.
（キースはいつも的外れだ。）

（生意気！）
"cheek"は「生意気、厚かましさ、生意気なふるまい、ずうずうしさ」
という意味。その他には、"insolence", "cockiness",
"impudence", "sass"などの言い方もある。"be cheeky"は
「生意気な態度をとる・口をきく」という意味。また"have the cheek
to 〜"は「生意気にも〜をする」という意味。
Ex: None of your cheek!

"There is no way 〜"は「〜する訳がない、〜するものか、
〜する可能性・見込みがない」という意味。その他、"way"を使った

（船が）航行中である。」、"in the way"「邪魔になって」、
"go one's way"「立ち去る」、"No way!"「とんでもない、
いやなことだ」、"make one's way"「進む、前進する」などがある。
Ex: There is no way we can go camping in this rain.
（この雨の中でキャンプできるわけないだろう。）

（良くやった。）
"Good on you."は、オーストラリア・ニュージーランドのスラングで
「よくやった、よかったね、おめでとう、いいね、えらいぞ、でかした」
など様々な意味がある。"Well done.", "Good for you.",
"Congratulations."などが同じ意味。褒め言葉だが、言い方によって
皮肉として使われることもある。
Ex: "I passed the entrance examination!" "Good on you."
「入学試験に合格したよ！」 「よくやったね。」
