Two friends Al and Liz are in a caf? talking about the Tokyo summer and trains.
A: What’s with all this rain? It’s supposed to be summer!
L: I know, it sucks, but we’re in the middle of the rainy season
here. Apparently it’s like this every year.
A: You’re kidding. I don’t mind the rain so much, but the
temperature too! It’s stinky hot.
L: The thing I don’t like is the change in temperature from inside
to outside. I mean, you go into the department stores, and it’s
like a fridge in there. Then you step outside and it’s like a big
blow-dryer in your face!
A: I think that’s how I got sick last week- my body couldn’t handle
the temperature extremes.
L: And you have to commute out from Takao. It must be horrible.
A: That’s what I really can’t stand, being stuck inside a train with
people crammed in there like sardines. But I joined the local
library, so now I can read to pass the time. And it works too.
L: I usually have my walkman with me. The thing I’ll never
understand is, how can these business people, after a long day at
work, doze off on the train, then wake up just in time for their
train stop? How do they do it?!
A: I guess it’s a skill!

"in the middle of 〜?は「〜の真っ最中、〜の真ん中、〜途中、
〜の中ほどで」という意味。「初めに」は"at the beginning of?,
「最後で」は?at the end of?となる。"middle?は「真ん中、中央」
という意味で、厳密には２点または２面の間の真ん中を現す。類語の
"center?は円形または球形の物の周囲から等距離にある真ん中を現し、
細長いものには使えない。
Ex: I don't want to get lost right in the middle of NY!
（ＮＹのど真ん中で迷いたくないよ！）

（冗談だろ。）
"You're kidding.?は「冗談でしょ、冗談言わないで、うそでしょ、
まさか！、本当？」という意味。他には、"You can't be serious.?,
"You must be joking.?, "That can't be true.?, "Come on!?
などの言い方もある。
Ex: "We're getting married!?
"You're kidding. You guys just met a week ago!?
「私達、結婚するの！」
「うそでしょ。あなた達、一週間前にあったばかりよ！」

"stand?は「我慢する、辛抱する、耐える」という意味。通常、
否定文、疑問文またはif節で、canと共に使われる。"bear?が類義語。
その他「我慢できない」という言い方には、"can't stomach?,
"impatient of?, "beyond sufferance?, "can't take?などが
ある。
Ex: I can't stand Liz's rude attitude! I'll have to say something
to her.
（もうリズの失礼な態度には我慢できない！彼女に何か言って
やらないと。）

A: いわしの缶詰みたいに、人がぎゅうぎゅう詰めの電車の中に閉じ
込められるのには、本当に我慢ならないよ。だけど今は、地元の
図書館で本を借りられるようになったから、時間を潰すのに、
本が読めるんだ。本当に時間が潰せるんだよ。
L: 私は、大体ウォークマンを持っているわ。私が、理解できないことは、
どうやってビジネスマンたちは、会社での長い一日の後、電車の中で
居眠りをして、そして、いよいよ彼らの駅というところで起きられるの？
どうやってるの？！
