N: Hey honey, how was the trip?
L: Oh God, don’t ask. It was a total nightmare!
N: What happened?
L: Well, first of all, our plane got diverted because of bad
weather, so we ended up landing an hour late, and when we finally
did land, they made us wait in the plane for three hours because
there’d been a bomb scare and the cops had to search the airport.
N: You ended up at THAT airport? Hell, that bomb scare was all over
the news. They didn’t find anything though, did they?
L: No. But there were a lot of pissed off passengers after that.
Anyway, it was past midnight when we finally got to our hotel,
but it turned out the place they’d booked for us was an absolute
armpit!
N: What? I thought you said they’d booked you into a four star
place?
L: Huh! That’s what I thought too, until I got a look at the place.
Wallpaper peeling off the walls, damp patches in the carpet,
cockroaches in the bathroom…
N: You should have asked to change rooms.
L: I would have, but the desk clerk was so rude when we checked in
I didn’t really want to go back.
N: Bummer. But how did the deal go? Surely you must have had some
good news on that front?
L: You wanna bet? The whole thing fell through at the last minute.
We came back empty-handed.
N: Oh boy! Sounds like you had the trip from hell!

"all over"は「至る所で、どこもかしこも」という意味。その他、
「すっかり終わって、ダメになって、全体にわたって、体中、いかにも
〜らしい、非難する、怒鳴りつける、まとわり付く」という意味もある。
Ex: People came from all over the country to see Madonna in concert.
（マドンナのコンサートをみるために、人々は全国から集まりました。）

"armpit"は「わきの下」という意味で、この場合は「汚い所、むさ
苦しい場所、不愉快な所」という意味になる。

"bummer"は「不愉快なこと、残念なこと、失望、失敗」などの意味が
ある。 "pity","shame", "distress", "bad luck"などが
同意語。その他、「怠け者、浮浪者」などの意味がある。
Ex: I got stopped for speeding yesterday. What a bummer!

"fall through"は「（計画などが）失敗に終わる、駄目になる、実現
されない」という意味。また、「（開いた穴などを）通り抜ける」と
いう意味もある。その他"fall"を使ったイディオムには、
"fall apart"「（物が）ばらばらになる、（組織・建物などが）
崩れる、（人が）取り乱す、精神的に参る」、"fall behind"
「（仕事などで）遅れる、（税金などを）滞納する」、"fall in with"
「（人と偶然に）知り合いになる、出会う、（計画・提案に）応ずる、
賛成する」、"fall over"「転ぶ、倒れる、つまずく」などがある。
Ex: Our ski trip fell through.

"empty-handed"は「手ぶらで、素手で」という意味。"empty"は
「からの、中身のない、空いている」という意味。"empty-"を使った
語には、"empty-headed"「愚かな、ばかな、無知な」がある。
Ex: We had a potluck party but Keith came empty-handed.

L: そうよ。だけど、その後には、たくさんのムカついた乗客がいたわよ。
とにかく、私達のホテルにようやくたどり着いた時は、夜中を過ぎて
いて、私達のために、向こうが予約した所が、ひどく汚い所だって
分かったの!
N: 何だって?向こうが、きみに四つ星ホテルを予約したって言わなかっ
たっけ?
L: ふん!私もそう思ったわ、その場所を見るまではね。壁紙は壁から
はがれているし、カーペットにはジメジメしたところがあるし、
トイレにゴキブリはいるし・・・
N: 部屋を変えてもらえばよかったのに。
L: そうしたかったけど、チェックインの時に、フロント係がすっごく失礼
だったから、あんまり戻りたくなかったの。
N: 災難だな。だけど、取引はどうだったの? もちろん、そっちには良い
ニュースがあるんだろ?
L: まさか!全てが、土壇場でダメになったの。私達、手ぶらで帰ってきた
のよ。
N: 何だよ!最悪の旅だったみたいだな!
