R: Morning to you Janice! How’s life?
J: Morning Ravi, can’t complain, the sun’s out! The convenience
store life keeping you busy?
R: Yeah, I’m flat out here, and you know I have to keep an eye on
these damn young kids who come in here.
J: Oh, had some trouble did you?
R: The other day, a kid, he must’ve been 13 or 14, well, he tried to
walk off with some potato chips. Luckily Sam, my part-timer,
grabbed him before he walked out.
J: Good on him, We’ve been having a bit of trouble with the young
kids around our place too. These damn boy racers at night,
tearing up the street.
R: Same here. We complained about it to the council, but there’s not
a lot that they can do. The police are stretched pretty thin.
J: Yeah, well don’t get me started about the cops! By the way, I
popped in to that new supermarket in town, and they were selling
this (holding up a container of ice cream) for $5.50! What a
rip-off!
R: Well, that gives you an excuse to keep coming back here, doesn’t
it!

"keep an eye on"は「＜人・物＞を（安全であるように[取られない]
ように）じっと見守る」という意味。その他"eye"を使った
イディオムには、"by the eye"「目分量で」、"close one's
eyes to"「見て見ぬふりをする」、"give one's eye to"
「（人・物・事）に注目する、（人を）世話する」、"in the mind's
eye"「心の中で、想像で」などがある。
Ex: Can you keep an eye on my bag?
（私のバックを見ててくれる？）
The police are stretched pretty thin.
（警察は、人手が足りなくて、やっとだからね。）
"stretched thin"は「引き伸ばされて細く・薄くなる、過剰な仕事を
与えられ限界寸前である、」という意味。"stretch"には「いっぱい
に伸ばす、（無理に）広げる、伸びをする、ピンと張る、力を出し
切っている、（筋肉などを）張り詰める」などの意味がある。また
「（真実などを）誇張する、おおげさに言う、（食料・持ち金など）を
やりくりする、何とか間に合わせる、（飲食物を）薄めて量を増やす」
という意味もある。

this month.

"rip off"は「（人から）法外な代金を取る、ぼる、盗む、奪う」
という意味。"rip"には「剥ぎ取る」という意味がある。その他、
"fleece", "sting", "shortchange", "skim off the top"
などの言い方もある。
Ex: I think I was ripped off at that bar.
（あのバーで、ぼられたと思う。）

R: ここと同じだ。そのことで、市議会に文句を言ったけど、彼らが出来る
ことはそんなにないんだ。警察は、人手が足りなくて、やっとだからね。
J: いや、私に警察官のことを話させないでよ!ところで、街のあの
新しいスーパーにちょっと寄ったの。そしたら、(アイスクリームの
容器を持ち上げている)これを5ドル50セントで売ってるのよ!なんて
ぼったくりなの!
R: まあ、ここに戻ってくる理由になるよね!
