Dave and his wife Claire are at an art museum.

Claire: Hmm…it’s nice to spend time looking at art masterpieces once in a while. We haven’t done that for ages, have we?

Dave: No…when was the last time we visited an art museum? Must have been a long time ago. By the way, honey, which painting would you take home if you were allowed to have one?

Claire: Are you going to buy me any of the paintings on display here?

Dave: No, no, darling…I think I asked you the same question before, but the most innocent way of appreciating art is to suppose you have permission to take one piece home—the one you like best.

Claire: What do you mean?

Dave: You see, I know you’re not one of them, but some people speak more highly of some paintings than others only because they are better known, or critics like them better. So your truest feeling…whether you really love the work or not…can only be verbalized through the question of “which painting would you want?”

Claire: Yeah, now I remember you told me your dad asked you the question whenever he took you to an art exhibit.

Dave: That’s right! He was a real nice guy…how I miss him.

Explanations

We haven't done that for ages, have we?

The most innocent way of appreciating art is to suppose you have permission to take one piece home---the one you like best.

Some people speak more highly of some paintings than others only because they are better known, or critics like them better.

speak highly of …
