God: That wasn’t very smart, Max.

Max: What the?!

God: If you go on telling people that you talked to me, then people are going to think you’re crazy. And if that happens, I won’t be able to help you.

Max: Well, right now it looks like I’m talking to myself. I doubt that’s helping to convey the impression of sanity.

God: Take out your cell phone. Pretend you’re talking into it.

Max: Why are you bothering me like this? What did I ever do to you?

God: It’s not what you do, Max. It’s what you don’t do that has made me decide to help you. You have love problems. You can’t sustain anything more than a short, shallow relationship. You’re two dimensional, Max. You’re incapable of forming, let alone maintaining, a deep, meaningful, close relationship with any member of the opposite sex. This is a problem.

Max: Jeeze, don’t hold back on my account.

God: I’m sorry, Max. Harsh as it may seem, I have to give you a slap in the face to wake you up to the gravity of this situation.

Max: I don’t…What do you want me to do?

God: I’ll explain later. For now, I think you’d better get back to work. Talk to you later.

This conversation takes place immediately after Max's conversation with Chad. God speaks to Max and warns him about talking to others about their speaking. After that we get some insight into some of the main issues with respect to Max. However, more detailed discussions about these will appear in dialogues to come. This dialogue serves, as God says, to wake Max up to the problem at hand. The question in this dialogue, "What did I ever do to you?", is a very common question that is asked when someone feels they are being treated unfairly for no good reason. In other words, they feel that whatever treatment they are receiving at the time is unjust.

Max: クソッ、オレに構うなよ。

God: 悪いわね、マックス。手厳しいと思うかもしれないけど、あなたの顔をひっぱたいて、事態が深刻だって目を覚まさせなくちゃいけないの。

Max: オレは何も…どうして欲しいわけ？

God: 後で説明するわ。今のところは、仕事に戻った方がいいわ。後でね。
