I don’t have a clue

It is Friday night, and Cassie is out having a few drinks with Malcolm and some of his friends from the Harrogate Centre. Malcolm is asking her about herself.

Malcolm: So Cassie, are you enjoying working at the Harrogate Centre?

Cassie: Yeah, it’s pretty interesting. In between giving directions to
little old ladies, dealing with pompous businessmen and trying to
get rid of loiterers, I don’t have much time to get bored.

Malcolm: But your contract is only for six months, right? Until Fiona
comes back?

Cassie: Yeah. And judging by the way this last month has flown by, that’s
going to be over before I know it.

Malcolm: So why are you temping? You’re not interested in holding down a
permanent job?

Cassie: It’s not that I’m not interested. I just don’t know what I want
to do. To tell you the truth, I’m a bit worried about the future.
I mean, I’m almost thirty and I still haven’t found my calling in
life. Everyone else I know seems to have their lives all sorted
out, but I have no idea where I am or where I’m going. I don’t
have a clue what I’m going to do when my contract runs out. I’m
trying to save money just in case I don’t find another job
straight away.

Malcolm: Well, if it’s a few extra bucks you’re after, I could have just
the thing for you.

Cassie: Oh really?

Malcolm: Yeah. We’re looking for testers for a new skincare product line.
You get free samples of all the products and a couple of hundred
dollars a month in return for using the products and giving us
constructive feedback.

Cassie: No way! Free cosmetics and I get paid to use them? What’s the
catch?

Malcolm: There is no catch. You just have to fill out the report form we
give you and add a few of your own comments and that’s it.

Cassie: It sounds too good to be true! When can I start?

Malcolm: Tomorrow if you want. Why don’t we meet for lunch, and then I
can explain about the samples and let you know what we want you
to do.

Cassie: It’s a date!

“get rid of”は「追い払う、追放する、厄介払いする、解雇する」と
いう意味。他には、「(好ましくないこと)から抜け出す、(好ましく
ないものを)取り除く、排除する、免れる」などの意味もある。“get
bored”は「退屈する、うんざりする」という意味。“get”+動作名詞の
表現は沢山あり、“get”は「ある状態になる」という意味。例えば、
“get angry”「怒る、むっとする」、“get drunk”「酔う」、“get
married”「結婚する」、“get fat”「太る」など。
Ex: We have to get rid of the mice in the attic.

(声・息の)とぎれ、鬼ごっこ」などの意味がある。
Ex: You have to be careful, there may be a catch.

It's a date!

(決まりね!)

“date”には「会う約束、約束、日取り」という意味がある。この場合は、
相手の会う約束の提案を受け入れているので、「決まりね」という
ように、訳している。英語では、日本語の「デート」と異なり、恋人
以外の人との会う約束にも、“date”を使う。
Ex: I made a date to go to see a movie with Linda.
(私は、リンダと映画を観に行く約束をした。)
