Maria’s confidant
Maria is talking with her male friend, Chris.

Maria: Did I ever tell you about my cousin, Ellen?
Chris: No, I don’t think so. What about her?
Maria: She and I are the same age, and we were very close since we were small. But since we left school, we lost touch. She got married and I started to work, and we no longer had much in common.
Chris: I see.
Maria: But my mom phoned me the other day, telling me Ellen will be coming to town, with her husband and son. And…I don’t want to admit this, but I’d rather not see her.
Chris: What’s keeping you from seeing her?
Maria: She’s incredibly pretty! She always made me feel inferior. Now I’m grown, and I think I’m pretty confident about myself, but I’m really scared because I suspect whatever I have achieved since the last time I saw her might break down just by seeing her again.
Chris: Come on, Maria. I don’t know how pretty your cousin is, but I think you’re very pretty. We’re all different. And even if were prettier than you, it’s what’s inside that counts, especially when you get old.

have … in commonは「共通点がある」。

I don't want to admit this, but I'd rather not see her.
(認めたくはないんだけど、できれば私は彼女に会いたくないの。)
admit this のthisは、その直後に出てくる「彼女に会いたくないという事実」を指しています。would rather notは「どちらかというと…したくない」ということ。

(なんで彼女に会いたくないの?)
直訳は「何があなたを彼女に会うということから遠ざけているの?」。英語らしい表現ですね。keep 人 from …は「(人)を…させないようにする」。以下の例も参考にしてください。
Ex) Regular workout keeps you from getting sick.
(定期的に運動すると病気にならないですむ。)
It's what's inside that counts.
(問題は中身だよ。)
こういう文の意味が、一目見ただけでさらっと頭に入ってくると嬉しいですよね。countは「重要視される」という意味。Its' that…なので強調構文ですね、その間にwhat's insideがあるので上のような訳になるのです。

M: でもこの間母が電話してきて、エレンがこっちに出てくるって言うの、ご主人と息子を連れて。それで…認めたくはないんだけど、できれば私は彼女に会いたくないの。
C: なんで彼女に会いたくないの?
M: 彼女ってすっごいかわいいのよ!いつも劣等感を感じてたわ。私も大人になって、自分自身にそこそこ自信がついたけれど、 こわいのは、彼女に再会することで、彼女に最後会った時から私が積み上げてきたものが壊れそうで。
C: ねえ、マリア。君のいとこがどれだけかわいいか知らないけど、僕は君はとてもかわいいと思うよ。人は皆それぞれだからね。それに、もしも彼女が君以上に美人だったとしても、問題は中身だよ、特に大人になるとね。
