Richard and Sophie are trying to decipher a postcard they received in the mail.
Richard: Hi, honey, I’m home. Here’s the mail.
Sophie: Hi darling. Anything interesting?
Richard: Bills, bills, and… oh, wait. What’s this? Somebody sent us a postcard from Spain.
Sophie: Spain? Who is it from?
Richard: I don’t know. I can’t make out the writing.
Sophie: Here, let me see. Oh, you’re right, I can’t read the name at all. This handwriting is terrible! It looks like a chicken has walked across the page!
Richard: Do we know anyone travelling in Spain at the moment?
Sophie: No one comes to mind. Hang on a minute – I think I can make it out. It looks like “Angela” to me.
Richard: No, I think that’s a “d,” not an “r.” Oh, I’ve got it! Andrea!
Sophie: Oh, you mean your second cousin, Andrea? One who chucked in her job last year to learn wine-making in France?
Richard: That’s the one. It must be from her – she’s got the worst handwriting of anyone I know!

ここでの"make out"は、「理解する、判読する」という意味で使われています。"make out"には他にも「作り上げる、うまくいく」などの意味があります。
ex: I can't make out your handwriting. Can you type next time?

"come to mind"は「心にやって来る」から転じて、「頭に浮かぶ、思い出す」という意味。"occur to me"、"come across my mind"も同じ意味で使われます。

「ちょっと待って。読めそうだけど」
"hang on a minute"は、「ちょっと待って」という意味。"hang on"だけでも「待って」と、ほぼ同じ意味で使われます。「電話を切らないでおく」という意味でも"hang on"を使いますね。

ここでの"chuck in"は、「〜を辞める」という意味。"chuck"だけでも同じ意味になります。ex: Why do you always chuck your hobbies in so quickly?
