E: Eva
T: Terry
T: Have you heard back about your job interview yet, Eva?
E: Yeah, they called me this morning. I didn’t get it.
T: Oh, that’s too bad.
E: That’s the fourth interview this month I’ve had that’s come to
nothing. I’m beginning to think nobody will employ me.
T: Come on Eva, you know that’s a load of rubbish. You just have
to be patient. Something will come along soon enough.
E: It’s just so hard to be positive when I keep getting doors
slammed in my face all the time.
T: I know how you feel. I’ve been through it all before too. But
keep your chin up. You never know, the next job you go for
could be the one.
E: I sure hope so.

そのまま使える便利なフレーズを覚えましょう。
That's the fourth interview this month I've had that's come to nothing.
（今月4回目の不合格の面接だわ。）
“to come to nothing" で「（努力などが）無駄になる、水の泡となる、
失敗に終わる」という意味。 “to come to 〜" はよく使われている言
い回しで、ほかに、 “to come to blows"「殴り合いになる」、“to
come to a head"「山場を越える」、“ to come to a climax"「クラ
イマックスに達する」、“to come to a close"「終わる」、“to come
to a decision"「決定に至る」などある。
Ex. All that hard work came to nothing.
（あんなに努力したのに、水の泡だった。）
Come on Eva, you know that's a load of rubbish.
（何を言ってるの、イーヴァ。 そんなことないよ。）
“a load of rubbish" で「ナンセンス、うそ、ばかげた話」という意味。
他にも、あまり丁寧な言い方ではないが、“a load of crap"、“a
load of garbage"、“a load of bull"という言い方がある。
Ex. “I'm useless." “What a load of rubbish!"
「私は役に立たずな人間だ。」「そんなことあるわけない！」
It's just so hard to be positive when I keep getting doors slammed in my face all the time.
（いつも不採用だから、積極的になるのは大変よ。）
“to get a door slammed in one's face" で「断られる、玄関払いさ
れる」という意味のフレーズ。 ドアまでくる話をしたくない人を目の
前にドアをバタンと閉めるというイメージからくる表現。他にも “to
be turned down" “to be declined" “to be refused" という言い
方がある。
Ex. He went to hundreds of casting agents to try and get an
acting job but the door was always slammed in his face.
（彼は、俳優の仕事を探すために、いろいろなキャスティング・
エージェントを訪ねたが、いつも断られた。）
But keep your chin up.
（でも、元気を出せよ。）
“keep your chin up" で「元気を出せ、頑張れ！、がっかりするな」と
いう意味。大変な状況や嫌の状況になっても、上を向いて、冷静に、そ
して陽気なままでいることを表す表現。
Ex. I know it's tough for you, but keep your chin up.
（大変だと思うけど、頑張れよ！）

T:何を言ってるの、イーヴァ。そんなことないよ。あせるなよ。そのうち
何か見つかるよ。
E:いつも不採用だから、積極的になるのは大変よ。
T:気持ちは分かるよ。僕もそういう経験あったからさあ。でも、元気出せ
よ。わからないよ、次に応募する仕事で採用になるかもよ。
E:ねぇ、そうなるといいけど。
