Continuing from the last dialogue, Max and God go out for a walk,
and talk about things for the last time.
in one way or another:
see fit to:
Max: So why don't you help out
Tina, then? She seems like she could use it.
God: Well, perhaps she could, Max.
But she's not ready for it yet.
Max: And I was?
Max: But why me? Why did you want
to help me? I mean, it's not like you talk to everyone, now, is
God: No, I don't talk to everyone.
Although in one way or another I do try to help everyone. I told
you, Max, I can manifest myself in any way I see fit. In your case,
I just chose a very direct approach. It was the best way to get
your attention. To be honest, I've tried to help you before, but
you never took notice.
Max: Yeah, but lots of people lead
empty lives and never change. Why did you pick me? Why was I saved?
God: I didn't really save you Max.
You did most of the hard work yourself. I just showed you the way.
It was always up to you whether or not to take it. To answer your
question, you're not all that special, Max. I hate to say. I've
helped others in this way. They just don't talk about it. I mean
, really, who would believe them?
Max: You've got a point there.
God: You are right about one thing,
Max. Many people do lead empty lives, and often by their own design.
They remain lost and give up on everything. It's a vicious cycle,
and for them there is nothing I can do. When I first spoke to you,
Max, you could have easily hung up the phone as soon as I started
to lay into you about Brenda. If you had done that, I would have
probably put an end to my efforts right there. It's not like I told
who I was right away, right?
Max: No, I guess not.
God: The point is you chose to
listen. You really have only yourself to thank for this.
Max: I don't know about that…So,
what do I do from here?
God: Well, I'm afraid this will
be the last time we talk…at least, in this way. You've given yourself
a new perspective, Max. My advice is to nurture that. Try to be
prepared for disappointment. It's as much a part of life as joy.
However, the most important thing is how you handle it. It's easy
to relish in the happy moments of life. It's another thing to accept
and understand those moments when life deals you a less than favourable
hand. Aside from that I'll leave everything in your hands.
Max: I don't know what to say…I
guess…well, thank you. I wish you could stick around a little longer.
God: You know Max, if you think
about it, I'm never really gone. You can find me when you need me.
In the meantime, take care. Bye, Max.
